The major markets of Lahore were sealed by the district administration on Wednesday for violation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the provincial government for the rapid proliferation of COVID-19 in the country.

The district administration's move comes after officials visited markets to inspect the implementation of precautionary measures and to locate shopkeepers who violated government-issued SOPs.

Authorities put forward 45 shops in Shah Alam Market and Azam textile market and the Anarkali market to spread the virus to defy SOP and defy guidelines.

In response, the shopkeepers opposed the operation and stated that they were fully compliant with all SOPs issued by the authorities.

After receiving assurance from the traders that the SOP would be complied with, the district administration allowed the traders to reopen the shops.

The administration also instructed traders to ensure that employees and buyers should use sanitizers and wear safety masks while practicing social disturbances inside the premises of the shops.

In addition, children and elders should be prevented from entering tight markets, the administration added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Karachi police sealed off the city's major markets - including Zainab Market - against the proliferation of coronaviruses for failure to follow protocols protecting shoppers.

After the government announced ease of sanctions from May 9, all major retail outlets and markets had run to open stores on Monday.

The last two days have seen Eid-ul-Fitr rapidly approaching, with shoppers taking precautions to wind up and get the goods that are in high demand.

Neither shopkeepers nor customers were seen to take necessary precautions such as wearing masks and using sanitizers repeatedly. In the wake of these violations, the city's police had sealed all the major markets, mostly lamp of shopkeepers who were eager to sell their goods after a gap of two months.
