Shahbaz Sharif Tests Positive for Coronavirus

Opposition leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif tested positive for the coronavirus on Thursday. The PML-N president separated himself at his residence in Model Town, Lahore.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesmen Ataullah Tarar, who recovered from the virus last week, asked the nation to pray for Shahbaz's speedy recovery. Several other PML-N leaders have also been diagnosed with the coronavirus.

Tarar claimed that Shahbaz had not met anyone except his appearance before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on June 9. He lamented that the PML-N president had repeatedly informed the anti-graft watchdog about his ill health and compromised immune system. 'If anything happens to Shahbaz Sharif, NAB and Imran Khan will be responsible,' Tarar said.

He further said that calligraphy was appealed to NAB through video link but the bureau insisted on summoning Shahbaz personally.

Earlier this month, the NAB raided Shahbaz's residence in Model Town after Shahbaz's failure to appeared before the anti-corruption watchdog despite seeking three consecutive summons against him in assets and money laundering cases.

Shahbaz had written a letter to the NAB citing health concerns as he did not go to the bureau's office.

The next day, the Lahore High Court granted pre-arrest bail to Shahbaz, preventing the NAB from arresting him until June 17 in both cases.

More than 119,000 people across the country have tested positive for the coronavirus, with at least 2,356 infected.

Several politicians, including members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have also tested positive for the virus.

Khurram Sher Zaman, a PTI member in the Sindh Assembly, also tested positive for the virus. In a tweet, he said he had been isolated for the past five days because he was ill and had tested positive for COVID 19.

Zaman had criticized the lockdown to stop the spread of the virus in Sindh and vowed to oppose the measures if they were implemented by the PPP-led provincial government.

On Monday, Federal Minister Sheikh Rashid and former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi also tested positive for the virus.

On June 9, PML-N spokesperson Morium Aurangzeb, along with his mother, tested positive for the virus.
