The Indian government said in a statement Monday that India had banned 59, mostly Chinese, mobile apps, including Tiktok, Alibaba's UC Browser, and Tencent's VChat, citing security concerns.
'The apps are harmful to India's sovereignty defense, state security, and public order,' the Ministry of Information Technology said.
The ban was imposed earlier this month following a deadly border dispute between the two nuclear-armed countries that left 20 Indian soldiers dead.
Banned Chinese apps include Tactic, Sherit, Kwai, UC Browser, Baidu Map, Shane, Class of Kings, DU Battery Saver, Hello, Like, Yukum Makeup, MI Community, CM Browsers, Virus Cleaner, APUS Browser, and many others.
'Under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, the Ministry of Information Technology has demanded the use of information technology (procedures to prevent access to information to the public and security measures). (2009) and in view of the emerging nature of the threats, it has been decided to suspend 59 applications as they are engaged in activities which, in view of the available information, engage in activities that defend India's sovereignty and integrity, India's defense. There is prejudice against state security and public order.' said the official press release announcing the ban.'
The press release added that the Ministry of Information Technology had received "numerous representations from citizens raising concerns about data security and the privacy risks associated with the operation of certain apps."
Popular among young people, Tik Tak has the most users in India, followed by China and the United States.
Tick Tock crossed the 1.5 billion mark in the first quarter of 2020 and immediately crossed the 2 billion mark.
