In India Kerala police said on Sunday that a 25-year-old woman who was killed by a snake bite in Kollam district two weeks ago was killed by her cruel husband who had hollowed out a black cobra in her room at night.
Kolam Rural Police Superintendent S Harishankar said that the preliminary investigation revealed that the husband P Suraj had tried to kill his wife in the same manner in March. S. Athra escaped the first snake bite.
'After a preliminary investigation, we found that it was a premeditated crime. He told us he had been planning for more than five months. Suraj, 32, wanted to steal her gold and marry another woman,' the police added.
Police have arrested Suraj, a resident of Ador and an employee of a private bank, and Suresh P, who caught the snake, who had helped him in the crime.
The woman's parents lodged a police complaint a week after her death, alleging that Suraj and his family members harassed Athra for dowry. The couple had been married for two years and had a son.
Police said Suraj bought a cobra from a snake handler after paying Rs 10,000. He received the necessary training from a handler.
On May 6, he went to Athra's house in Anchal, where she had been receiving treatment at her parent's house since the first attack.
'Sun and Handler were in contact with each other and both made at least 50 calls. After the first attempt failed, they were waiting for an opportunity,' said Harishankar.
After Athra fell asleep, Suraj allegedly took a snake out of the bottle and threw it at her, police said. He stayed up all night to make sure he didn't get bitten. He left the room in the morning and started reading a newspaper on the porch.
The woman's mother found her daughter unconscious in the morning. she was rushed to a hospital where doctors said she died from a snake bite. Later, when the room was searched, the family found a cobra, which had been killed by Suraj.
The woman's parents allege in the police complaint that the couple slept in an air-conditioned room and it was hard to believe they had not seen the snake before.
Athra's mother and father alleged that the woman had been harassed for dowry and that the jewelry was missing from her locker.
'I was forced to loosen my wallet on several occasions. But we never thought he would kill my daughter like that,' said Vijaya Senan the father of the woman.
'We have investigated the case, it is a strange matter, at this point, we cannot deny whether more people were involved or not,' Harishnakar said. 'He will be arrest and be taken to court on Monday.'
