Samsung has announced another version of the Galaxy S20: the Galaxy S20 Tactical Edition, which promises a 'mission-ready military smartphone.' It's targeted for a slightly different kind of consumers than the previously released S20, S20 Plus, S20 Ultra, or even just the MMW S20 from Verizon.
Despite the strong military branding and ambitions, the S20 Tactical Edition is effectively the only regular S20 phone that has some extra software features and security options in an invasive juggernaut case.
In terms of hardware, the Tactical Edition comes with a 6.2-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 865, 12GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, all 6GHz 5G support, and identical specs with a triple rear camera system.
But according to Samsung, Tactical Edition meets the unique needs of military operators by offering additional features of the software. They include a night vision mode that turns off the display so you don't get blind while wearing night-vision goggles and the option to unlock the phone when you're in landscape mode. Which sounds like a feature that should have included in the regular S20.
There's also a dramatic stealth mode which promises to disable LTE and mute all RF broadcasting for full off-grid communications, and which just looks like rebranded airplane mode.
There is also Samsung's marketing pitch to military users of the usefulness of DEX, with the company arguing that the PC emulating mode means that operators can use the phone for completing reports, training, and mission planning.
Samsung uses its Knox security system which features dual encryption system called DualDAR which meets various US government security standards for secure data. But this is no different from what is already offered to consumers on regular
S20 models.
As one might think, the S20 Tactical Edition is not being sold to regular consumers. It will only be available in Q3 for IT Channel Selected Partners, for which no price or exact release date has been announced.
