It has recently been revealed that Huawei is working on a smartphone with an under-screen camera, which will eliminate the need for the traditional punch hole mark on the selfie screen that most camera phones use.
Huawei is far from the only manufacturer working on this exciting concept, as other manufacturers are also exploring the concept of under-display cameras.
In June 2019, Chinese camera phone manufacturers Xiaomi and Oppo hung a prototype phone with a selfie camera at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately, this prototype was not good enough to be put into production, as the under-display camera did not give enough light.
But since this is an initial prototype, there has been an assortment of smartphone companies that have taken a stab at under-display cameras. Huawei's offering includes a rumless camera phone with a very round display and no physical buttons on the device, except for an on / off button at the top.
The latest news comes from two recently approved patent applications, let's go digital. These patents were filed in October 2019 but were only published on June 2, 2020.
These patents include images of seven products of the same unannounced Huawei camera phone, with the only notable difference being the rear camera unit. One of the patents shows a typical vertical bar, while the other features a circular camera unit.
Although the commercially released camera phone with a back screen camera has not yet hit the market, it is clear that it has captured the imagination of many smartphone manufacturers. It looks like we'll soon see a phone with an under-display camera, just when and who it is.
