The New York Times reported Friday that Russia had offered money to Afghan terrorists to kill US troops and other coalition forces last year.
Just as President Donald Trump is seeking to withdraw troops and end America's longest-running war in Afghanistan, afghan terrorists have been given huge rewards for targeting US forces.
The newspaper quoted unnamed officials as saying that Trump had been told about the findings in March, but that no decision had been made.
It said the militants were believed to have amassed a bounty, but it was unclear whether the specific deaths of US troops were in doubt.
The newspaper quoted a Kremlin spokesman as saying that Russia was unaware of the allegations.
The New York Times said there were differing views on why Russia would support Taliban attacks, including a desire to keep the United States at war.
It says the Russian unit could also want to avenge the killing of the Russian enclave in Syria, where Moscow supports President Bashar al-Assad.
According to the newspaper, the Taliban operation was led by a unit called GRU, which has been blamed for a number of international incidents in the UK, including the 2018 chemical weapons attack, involving a Russian-born double agent. Sergei Skripal who was almost killed.
US intelligence has concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to support Trump, including manipulating social media.
Trump has ridiculed the findings and sought warm relations with President Vladimir Putin, even as his administration continues to impose sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine.
