Islamabad Mayor Ansar Aziz Suspended by Cabinet after Inquiry for Corruption

Islamabad Mayor Ansar Aziz Suspended by Cabinet for Corruption

The national Cabinet has approved the suspension of Islamabad Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz for 90 days, a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior on Sunday.

Aziz was suspended, with immediate enforcement, for a period of ninety days for a fair investigation under section 96 of the 'Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act, 2015 (X of 2015)', the message said.

The Cabinet approved a summary of the suspension of the Mayor of Islamabad through circulation so that an independent and transparent inquiry could be held against him. The notification was issued by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Irfan Anjum.

Earlier this year, a reference was filed against Aziz against a member of PML-N alleging that he was misusing his powers, using employees for personal use, And operating official vehicles that were allegedly beyond their rights.

The reference was filed by Humayun Akhtar, Member and Acting Chief Metropolitan Officer (CMO) of the Capital Development Authority (CDA). A local government commission led by PTI legalist Ali Nawaz Awan recommended Aziz be suspended during the investigation.

MNA Awan is also the special assistant to Prime Minister Imran Khan on CDA matters. The case appeared to be a political tussle between PTI and PML-N.

However, Mayor Aziz challenged the reference to a petition in the Islamabad High Court claiming that the allegations against him were politically motivated. He had informed the court that despite a legal delegation of power to the Metropolitan Corporation of Islamabad (MCI), many functions were not transferred to the MCI by the CDA and the Chief Commissioner Office.

Aziz had also alleged that the ruling PTI had paralyzed union councils in Islamabad and MNA Awan presented challenges to the mayor soon after he was appointed the head of the commission, who registered a reference against him.
