PM Imran Khan requests for larger Covid-19 bailout package for developing countries

PM Imran Khan calls for bigger bailout package

Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday called for a major financial bailout package by rich economies for developing countries to mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 epidemic.

In a telephone conversation with Abi Ahmed Ali, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Khan said: "The global recession is imminent, ... developing countries need to meet immediate financial needs, sustain growth, strengthen fragile health systems and Also a combination of additional measures will be required to save. 'Provides social security to people living below the poverty line.'

The Prime Minister's telephone call was part of his diplomatic outreach to call on a group of interested countries at the United Nations to initiate consultations to propose a comprehensive solution to the debt challenges of developing countries against the backdrop of Covid-19.

'The two leaders agreed on the importance of working closely with the UN Secretary-General and other stakeholders to work out a comprehensive plan on debt relief issues,'  the PM office said in a statement.

The two Prime Ministers also discussed bilateral relations. Mr. Khan called for deepening cooperation in which political and diplomatic engagement increased and mutual trade grew.

'In the context of Pakistan's  Engage Africa policy, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of close bilateral relations with Ethiopia,' the statement said.

Prime Minister Khan reiterated his congratulations to Prime Minister Abi on winning the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize and invited him to visit Pakistan.
