Dubai/UAE: A patent has been approved by the Emirates Ministry of Economy in UAE to develop an innovative and breakthrough treatment for COVID-19 infection using stem cells, Emirates News Agency (WAM) reports.
The treatment was created by a group of doctors and medical experts at the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Center, ADSCC, and involves taking samples of stem blood cells from the patient's own blood and reinjecting them into the patient's bloodstream after activating them, the patent was praised for a clever way in which stem cells are gathered.
The treatment was administered to 73 COVID-19 patients in the United Arab Emirates who have all been successfully treated and cured the virus by treating them in their lungs after sorting in a fine mist. Its therapeutic effect is anticipated by modulating the immune response to regenerate lung cells and protect COVID-19 infection from overreacting and to further damage healthy cells.
The treatment has successfully completed the initial phase of clinical trials, demonstrating its safety. No immediate adverse effects have been reported by any of the patients receiving treatment and no interaction has been found with traditional treatment protocols for COVID-19 patients. Trials are underway to demonstrate the efficacy of the treatment and are expected to be completed in a few weeks.
It is worth noting that treatment is given to patients with traditional medical interventions and will be implemented as an adjunct to established treatment protocols rather than replacement.
This is an addition to the arsenal of treatment interventions and is representative of the concerted effort and commitment of the UAE government to end the COVID-19 epidemic. Non-pharmacological interventions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 such as staying at home, social disturbances, and infection prevention and control measures are necessary to reduce the burden of disease on the health care system.
