As budget sessions of the National Assembly and Senate begin today, it has been reported that Science and Technology Minister Fawad Chaudhry has announced he will not attend the lower house of parliament due to fears of the coronavirus.
In a statement, the minister called for a virtual session of both houses of parliament, saying the results of the "direct session" were coming to light as several parliamentarians had contracted the infection in the past week.
Fawad Chaudhry stressed the need for strict adherence to precautionary measures and said that they should not throw precautionary measures in the air which increases the risk of catching the disease.
The Senate is scheduled to convene this morning, while the National Assembly will meet in the afternoon to strictly adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of the virus.
The government is expected to present the federal budget for the fiscal year 2020-21 on June 12.
In a meeting at the Parliament House in Islamabad on June 5, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjarani and National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser reviewed the arrangements for the sittings of both the houses.
Smoke has been raised in the House of Representatives to protect lawmakers and staff.
